Author bio
S.W. Kane did not arrive at crime fiction by a straight line. She studied History of Design, worked at the Royal Institute of British Architects, and later took on jobs in radio and the music industry. That mix matters when you read her novels. They care about buildings, hidden spaces, and the way a place can shape a life long after everyone thinks the story is over.
She also trained seriously for the page. Kane earned an MA in Creative (Crime) Writing from City University, and she was reading crime fiction from an early age. She was especially drawn to stories set in cold, inhospitable places, which helps explain why her books feel so wintry, damp, and uneasy even when they are set in the middle of London.
The spark that pushed everything into focus came from a real place.
A chance encounter with a derelict fort in rural Pembrokeshire led her into urban exploration, and that fascination became the engine of her fiction. Kane's work keeps returning to abandoned structures, sealed rooms, ruined estates, and forgotten infrastructure. In her books, dead space is never really dead. Someone lived there, someone suffered there, and someone usually wants the past to stay buried.
Her debut novel, The Bone Jar, appeared in 2020 and introduced Detective Lew Kirby. The case begins with an elderly woman's body in a derelict asylum on the Thames, but the book is doing more than setting up a murder puzzle. It also lays out the ingredients Kane keeps using so well: hidden histories, uneasy institutions, urban explorers, and old damage leaking into the present. The novel was shortlisted for the CWA John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger in 2021 and has sold more than 80,000 copies.
Kane followed it with The Drowning Place in 2023 and The Whistler in 2025. Across those books, Lew Kirby's investigations move through another abandoned London estate and then into the city's sewer system. Connie Darke, an archivist and urban explorer, becomes a key figure in the series, especially as she keeps digging into the truth about her sister's death. That ongoing thread gives the books extra pull, because the murders matter, but so does the history underneath them.
The city is never just a backdrop.
What stands out in Kane's fiction is how physical it feels. You can see the cracked concrete, blocked corridors, frost, mud, river water, and rusted gates. The stories are police procedurals at heart, but they also have the slow dread of a place that remembers what happened inside it. Lew Kirby handles the official investigation. Connie goes looking where official channels do not reach. That split gives the series both structure and tension.
Kane lives in London, which suits the world of her books. She writes about a city most tourist postcards leave out, the boarded-up corners, the redevelopment zones, the tunnels, and the half-erased histories under new construction. If you like crime novels that combine solid investigation with eerie settings and buried secrets, her work has a very clear lane. It feels built from research, curiosity, and a genuine love of the strange stories cities hide.
