Reluctant Heroes Books in Order

Reluctant Heroes is Brockmann's way of opening a fresh door inside the larger Troubleshooters world. The first book, Do or Die, is connected to that universe, but it is designed to feel like the start of a new story arc rather than book seventeen or eighteen of something you have to study first. That makes it one of the easier places for newer readers to jump in.

The core idea is right there in the title. These are not shiny, eager heroes sprinting toward official glory. The people at the center of this branch are useful, damaged, funny, and often very reluctant to get pulled back into danger. Ian Dunn, the hero of Do or Die, looks like a rogue former SEAL who has gone fully criminal. In reality, he is still doing the kind of high-stakes work that official channels cannot quite handle, and he is not thrilled when lawyer Phoebe Kruger insists on getting involved.

That gives the series a looser, slightly more off-book feel than the classic SEAL-team novels. The jobs are unofficial. The team is pieced together from people with very specific skills. Familiar faces from Troubleshooters, including Martell Griffin and members of Jules Cassidy's FBI circle, help connect the worlds, but the new books are not buried under old continuity.

The tone is upbeat even when the stakes are ugly. Brockmann leans into fast talk, improvised plans, and characters who are very good at what they do but not always thrilled to be doing it. The romance grows out of that same pressure. Nobody here is floating through an easy fantasy. Love arrives in the middle of kidnapping plots, mob problems, legal headaches, and dangerous people who are willing to get children hurt.

If you like the Troubleshooters atmosphere but want a cleaner jumping-on point, Reluctant Heroes is a smart place to go. It keeps the action and the wit, but it starts a little closer to the ground, with heroes who have already seen enough to know exactly why they should say no, and then say yes anyway.
