Undercover Cops Books in Order

This is Suzanne Brockmann in compact romantic suspense mode. The series is small, just two linked books, but you can already see many of the things she would later do so well in her bigger suspense worlds. The setting is St. Simone, Florida, a Gulf Coast town where bright weather and easy beach life sit right next to drug smuggling, murder, and bad choices.

The danger starts close to shore.

In Not Without Risk, detective Jim Keegan is forced back into the orbit of Emily Marshall, the woman who once broke his heart, after she stumbles into a deadly mess on the water. In A Man to Die For, the focus shifts to Jim's partner, detective Felipe Salazar, whose life is tangled up with disguise, suspicion, and a desperate need to prove he is not the villain he appears to be. Both books throw ordinary people into situations that turn dangerous very quickly.

What makes the series work is how personal it feels. These are not giant military operations or sprawling cast books. The stories stay close to the central couple, and the suspense is built around trust, old feelings, and split-second decisions. Brockmann likes to give her characters a real emotional history, so the romance and the danger keep pressing on the same sore spots.

St. Simone matters, too. It is marinas, back roads, beach houses, and a town small enough that everyone feels close, sometimes helpfully, sometimes not. There is not much room to hide, which gives both books a tight, pressured feel. The setting is sunny on the surface, but the crimes underneath it are serious.

If you know Brockmann mostly from her SEAL novels, this series feels like an earlier, more intimate version of the same instinct. The action is fast, the chemistry is immediate, and the emotional stakes are never treated as an afterthought. These books are a good pick if you want early Brockmann, romantic suspense with strong forward drive, and cops who are just as likely to get in trouble with their hearts as they are with the bad guys.
