Author bio

Susan Van Kirk grew up in Galesburg, Illinois, and went on to study history at Knox College before earning a graduate degree in secondary education from the University of Illinois. Long before she published mysteries, she was a teacher with a front-row seat to the dramas, jokes, worries, and surprises that fill a school day.

In 1968, fresh out of college, she arrived in Monmouth, Illinois, to teach English and speech at the local high school. What she expected to be a job became a long working life shaped by students and a small Midwestern town.

Van Kirk taught high school for thirty-four years, then spent another ten years teaching at Monmouth College. She also raised three children while building that career. Her years in classrooms later gave her both material and perspective for her writing.

Writing came later.

She began writing at age sixty, after her children had left home, starting with a memoir drawn from her years as an educator. After retiring from teaching in 2011, she turned in earnest to the mystery stories she had loved since childhood. In fifth grade, she read through the Sherlock Holmes adventures after working her way through Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton, and the Hardy Boys.

That early reading habit stuck. Van Kirk has said she likes mysteries because, after all the mess and misdirection, they can put moral order back into a chaotic world. Her own books lean into secrets, old wounds, betrayal, and the long memory of close-knit communities, though there is room for friendship, romance, and an occasional dry smile.

Her first mystery, Three May Keep a Secret, introduces Grace Kimball, a recently retired teacher in the fictional Illinois town of Endurance. Grace works alongside her former student, Detective TJ Sweeney, as old crimes and current murders disturb the town. The follow-ups, including Marry in Haste, The Locket, Death Takes No Bribes, and The Witch's Child, keep returning to the links between local history and present danger.

Van Kirk also writes beyond Endurance. A Death at Tippitt Pond follows genealogist Beth Russell into a decades-old murder and a complicated family history in Sweet Iron, Illinois. Her Art Center Mysteries begin with Death in a Pale Hue, placing painter Jill Madison at a new community art center where professional pressure and murder quickly collide.

Teaching still runs through her work, even when the lead character is not a teacher. So do small towns, where everybody seems to know everybody, until it turns out they do not know nearly enough. Van Kirk continues to write mysteries and remains active in the mystery-writing community.
