Author bio

Susan Hunter writes the Leah Nash Mysteries, small-town murder stories set in fictional Himmel, Wisconsin. Her lead character, Leah, is a journalist who keeps following the questions other people would rather leave alone. That stubborn streak gives the books their momentum.

Hunter's route to fiction ran through a long working life with words at its center. She worked as a reporter and later as managing editor of a small daily newspaper, earning awards for investigative and feature reporting along the way. She then moved into university publications and marketing, while also teaching English composition classes.

It is a useful background for a mystery writer. Reporting teaches you to listen closely, notice what is missing, and keep asking the next question. Those habits show up in Leah's investigations, which often begin with an official explanation that doesn't quite hold together.

Hunter knows how to make a small town feel crowded with secrets.

The series starts with Dangerous Habits, where Leah is back at the local paper and investigates the death of a nun connected to a school from her own past. In Dangerous Mistakes, a surgeon's apparent suicide brings Leah into conflict with a killer, while Dangerous Places sends her into a decades-old missing-person case. The cases are built around murder, family history, old grudges, and the uncomfortable fact that almost everyone has something to protect.

Later books keep widening Leah's world without losing the town at the center of it. Dangerous Flaws asks Leah to consider whether her ex-husband could be a murderer. Dangerous Betrayals finds her looking into a conviction that may have sent the wrong woman to prison, even as pressures in Leah's own work and personal life mount. The mysteries have clear, self-contained cases, but the people around Leah change from book to book.

Hunter has described a process that begins with the victim, the killer, and the motive. From there, she works out the suspects' connections and backstories, then lets the path through the middle of the novel take shape as she writes. It suits mysteries that keep shifting the reader's suspicions while still giving the final answer a solid foundation.

She likes a question with no easy answer.

Hunter also brings a dry, self-aware sense of humor to her public bio. She has described herself as an introvert and lives in rural Michigan with her husband, Gary. Away from writing, she has mentioned reading, classic films, walks, time with friends and family, chocolate chip cookies, and the occasional stretch spent staring out the window instead of getting back to work.

For readers, the appeal is straightforward: Leah is smart, persistent, and sometimes wrong, which makes the investigations feel personal as well as puzzling. Start at the beginning to see her life and relationships develop, or pick up a later case when you want a fast-moving mystery with a determined reporter at the center.
