Series background & context
The Leah Nash Mysteries follows Leah Nash, a sharp, stubborn journalist in the fictional small town of Himmel, Wisconsin. At the start of Dangerous Habits, Leah is back at the local paper where she began, trying to rebuild after a difficult stretch in her career. Then a storm exposes the body of a nun, and the story pulls Leah toward a school, a death from her own past, and a truth that powerful people want buried.
Leah is not a police officer or a private investigator. She is a reporter who notices gaps in the official story and keeps asking questions after everyone else wants to move on. That makes her useful to people with nowhere else to turn, and deeply inconvenient to suspects, local leaders, and sometimes the police.
Himmel matters as much as the crimes. It is the kind of place where people know one another's families, high-school history, business troubles, and old resentments. A murder can reach into a decades-old disappearance, a reunion, a family feud, or a secret tucked behind an ordinary local institution. The town may be small, but Leah rarely lacks for suspects.
The cases are personal without being all about Leah.
Each novel has its own central mystery. Dangerous Places takes Leah into a cold case involving a teenager who vanished years earlier. In Dangerous Secrets, a murder tied to an online dating business puts one of Leah's colleagues in the spotlight. Dangerous Flaws raises the stakes when Leah's ex-husband becomes a suspect, and Dangerous Pursuits finds her investigating the death of a young woman whose connections lead in several troubling directions.
Across the later books, Leah's role changes as her professional life develops, but her method stays much the same. She talks to people, follows the money and personal grudges, weighs competing versions of the past, and risks making enemies. Her persistence is a strength, though it can also leave her rushing toward trouble before she has every answer.
The tone lands between a traditional small-town mystery and a more tense crime story. There is room for dry humor, relationships, and familiar faces, but the crimes can carry real emotional weight. The books lean on interviews, hidden motives, and steadily tightening pressure rather than graphic violence.
New readers can begin with Dangerous Habits for the fullest introduction to Leah and Himmel. The main mysteries resolve within each installment, so later books can also work on their own. Reading in order gives the supporting cast and Leah's changing relationships more room to land.
