2016

One week after the outbreak, Tom Clemens heads toward Washington hoping to warn the president, but the government is already falling apart. Choked roads, collapsing towns, zombies, and ruthless survivors turn the trip into a brutal race through a dying America.

Infected

by Frank Tayell

2016

Tom Clemens is already running from a murderous conspiracy when Manhattan descends into zombie chaos. As America collapses, he hunts for the scientist who might explain the outbreak and discovers the cabal may be tied to it all.

Series background & context

Here We Stand tells the beginning of the outbreak from the American side of the larger Evacuation universe. The main character is Tom Clemens, the man readers later know as Sholto, and he is already in trouble before the undead appear. He has spent years chasing a secretive cabal tied to murder, blackmail, and political manipulation. By the time the first attacks hit Manhattan, Tom is framed, on the run, and painfully aware that the outbreak may not be an accident at all.

That gives the series a strong conspiracy-thriller spine.

The zombies matter, of course. Cities fall, roads clog with refugees, quarantine measures fail, and every hour makes the United States feel less governable. But the books are not only about running from the dead. Tom is also trying to piece together who engineered the disaster, warn the right people before they are cut off or killed, and find the scientist who might understand what has been unleashed. The undead provide the panic. The cabal provides the deeper dread.

Because there are only two books, the story moves fast. Infected starts in Manhattan and quickly pushes Tom out into a country that is breaking apart in real time. Divided keeps that momentum going as he heads toward Washington and then beyond, moving through towns that are trying to fortify themselves, roads that are choked with evacuees, and communities where fear is turning survivors against one another. The scope is national, but the feeling is immediate.

The setting matters because America is still in the first brutal stage of collapse. Institutions are trying to function, but only just. The presidency, federal agencies, emergency broadcasts, roadblocks, and military responses are all still part of the picture, which makes these books feel different from the later, more stripped-down survival of the main series. There is still a sense that the system might hold, right up until it clearly will not.

Tone-wise, this is one of Tayell's sharper, more urgent series. It mixes political suspense with road survival and gives less space to settlement-building than the main run of Surviving The Evacuation. That makes it a good choice if you want the outbreak phase, the origin of the wider conspiracy, and a clearer sense of how Sholto became such an important figure later on.

Read on its own, Here We Stand works as a compact story of collapse. Read alongside the main books, it fills in major background and makes the broader world feel much larger. Either way, expect a tense mix of zombies, politics, and one man trying to stay half a step ahead of both.
