Get Me Out of Here!

by Andy McNab

2019

Danny Mack and his friends go on an outdoor adventure trip that goes hilariously wrong. They have to deal with leaky tents, terrible food, and a series of mishaps.

Series background & context

Known primarily for his gritty accounts of SAS operations and high-octane adult thrillers, Andy McNab took a sharp left turn with the "Get Me Out of Here" series. Collaborating with acclaimed children’s author Phil Earle, McNab swapped the dangerous deserts of Iraq for the slightly less lethal, but equally chaotic, setting of school trips gone wrong. The result is a collection of books that feels distinctly different from his solo work, trading silenced weapons for slapstick humor and genuine belly laughs.

The stories center on Danny Mack, a regular kid who somehow acts as a magnet for disaster. Along with his close-knit circle of friends, Danny isn’t looking for trouble or trying to be a hero. They are just trying to get through the semester without total humiliation. However, fate usually has other plans.

In the first adventure, Get Me Out of Here!, the setting is an outdoor survival retreat. These trips are supposed to be about team building and fresh air. Instead, the group finds themselves in a situation that spirals out of control when the adults in charge prove to be completely useless. Rather than fighting enemy combatants, Danny and his crew have to battle the elements, hunger, and their own incompetence. McNab uses this setup to sneak in actual survival tips—like how to build a shelter or find food—but applies them to ridiculous scenarios that younger readers can relate to.

It is survival of the funniest.

The chaos continues in Get Me Out of Here: The Rats of Doom. This time, the stakes shift from the wilderness to a suspiciously cheap holiday that Danny’s team manages to win. As expected, the luxury vacation is a facade for a crumbling resort overrun by vermin and bad plumbing. Once again, the group has to rely on their wits and their bond with one another to navigate a series of gross-out challenges and comical perils.

What makes these books stand out is the chemistry between the two authors. Phil Earle brings a lot of heart and a perfect ear for dialogue, ensuring the characters sound like actual kids rather than miniature soldiers. McNab provides the technical structure and the "how-to" elements of surviving a crisis, even if that crisis involves disgusting food or terrifying wildlife.

The series is firmly aimed at a middle-grade audience. It moves at a fast pace, keeping descriptions punchy and focusing heavily on the action and the banter between friends. While there is a touch of peril, it is never too dark. The focus remains on the comedy of errors and the resilience of the group.

For families who know McNab only for Bravo Two Zero, this series offers a completely different side of his writing. It is light, accessible, and focuses on the one thing that gets any soldier—or student—through a hard time: a good sense of humor.
