Sugar Shack Books in Order

The Sugar Shack series takes place in Deer Lick, Montana, a small town where everybody knows your business and the family bakery sits at the center of daily life. The bakery, called the Sugar Shack, belongs to the Silverthorne family, and the series follows the three Silverthorne siblings as they find their way back home, back to themselves, and eventually into love. These are contemporary romances, but they carry a little extra heart because every book is shaped by recent loss and the way families keep functioning, badly and lovingly, after it.

The first book, Second Chance at the Sugar Shack, follows Kate Silver as she returns from her Hollywood life after her mother's death and gets pulled back into the bakery and into the orbit of deputy Matt Ryan. Any Given Christmas turns to Kate's brother Dean, an NFL quarterback whose injury sends him home for the holidays and straight into the path of kindergarten teacher Emma Hart. Then Somebody Like You gives the spotlight to Kelly Silverthorne, a Chicago prosecutor who comes back to Deer Lick after a professional blowup and has to deal with family baggage, old expectations, and deputy James Harley.

The Montana setting matters a lot here. Deer Lick is not just a backdrop for meet-cutes. It is the place the Silverthornes have spent years trying to leave, return to, or redefine. The bakery means work, memory, obligation, and comfort all at once. There is a lot of flour, sugar, cold weather, coffee, and small-town traffic through these books. That gives the whole series a cozy feel, even when the characters are wrestling with grief or old resentment.

And yes, there is a ghost.

One of the series' signature touches is the continuing presence of the Silverthorne mother, Letty. She is dead, but not exactly gone, and her matchmaking instincts do not stop just because she has crossed over. The ghost element is not meant to turn the books into paranormal romance. It is light, funny, and surprisingly tender. More than anything, it gives Terry a way to explore unfinished family business, guilt, and love that does not disappear when someone dies.

That balance is really the point of the series. The Sugar Shack books are warm and humorous, but they do not pretend life is easy. The Silverthorne siblings are carrying old hurts. Their father is part of the emotional weather. The town can be supportive one minute and impossible the next. Still, the overall feeling is generous. Terry gives the characters room to mess up, regroup, and figure out what home means when they are not the same people they were before.

If you like bakery-centered small-town romance with strong family ties, second chances, and a little offbeat charm, Sugar Shack is an easy series to recommend. The books are connected enough that they are best read in order, especially if you want the full effect of Letty's posthumous meddling and the way each sibling's story adds to the family as a whole.
