Series background & context

Suddenly a Duke plays with one of Regency romance's favorite fantasies, the man who unexpectedly inherits a dukedom, and then improves it by pairing those men with women who are not waiting around to be chosen. Aston clearly enjoys what happens when new power crashes into already capable heroines.

These dukes are scrambling.

That is part of the fun. The heroes in this world may have titles, but they do not always know how to inhabit them. Some come back from war. Some have spent years living under very different expectations. Some want duty and nothing more, until they meet a woman who makes that tidy plan impossible. The heroines are artists, designers, trainers, and women with real skills or experience. They are often more settled in themselves than the men are.

Because of that, the series has a lively push and pull between social expectation and personal choice. What kind of duchess is acceptable? Who gets to decide what a duke's household should look like? Can love work when both people are resisting the role society wants them to play? Aston answers those questions with plenty of attraction, but also with a strong respect for heroines who already have lives of their own.

If you like Regency romance with title shocks, unconventional matches, and women who do not go soft the minute a duke appears, Suddenly a Duke is a satisfying series to explore. It keeps the aristocratic glamour while making room for characters who feel more modern in their self-knowledge.
