Series background & context

Dukes of Distinction is a Regency series built around high-status heroes who look impressive from the outside and are often a mess underneath. Aston uses the familiar appeal of the duke, wealth, rank, and social power, then complicates it with grief, scandal, past betrayal, and reputations that do not always tell the full story.

No one here has an easy path.

The women in these books are often carrying just as much. Widows, women sidelined by family, and heroines dealing with loss or vulnerability all show up in this world. That creates romances with more emotional ache than sparkle. There are still ballrooms, house parties, and London gossip, but the tension often comes from whether the couple can trust what they are building when both have already been hurt.

Aston likes to put these characters in situations where appearances mislead. A notorious rake may be lonelier than he seems. A seemingly protected lady may be living at the mercy of selfish relatives. A title may solve one practical problem while creating three new personal ones. That mix keeps the series grounded even when the social stakes are very grand.

Readers who enjoy emotionally bruised dukes and women who refuse to be flattened by circumstance will find a lot to like here. The books are connected by tone and setting more than by one giant ongoing plot, so they work well as standalones. The through line is simple: powerful men, vulnerable hearts, and love stories that ask both people to meet each other honestly.
