Series background & context

Studies in Scandal begins with an inheritance that sounds like a dream for a book lover. Lady Celeste Beauchamp, a bluestocking with a famous private library and art collection, leaves her coastal estate to four young women who barely know one another. The inheritance gives each woman a home and a chance to pursue her own intellectual interests, but Lady Celeste’s death also raises troubling questions.

The four beneficiaries are Miss Ivy Wareham, Lady Daphne Forsyth, Miss Sophia Hastings, and Miss Gemma Hastings. They are scholars, artists, and investigators in their own ways, not interchangeable Regency heroines waiting to be chosen. Their shared home and library create the connective thread as each book follows a different woman toward romance and danger.

Books matter here.

In Ready Set Rogue, Ivy arrives ready to claim the library, only to clash with Quill Beauchamp, Marquess of Kerr, Lady Celeste’s nephew. When evidence suggests that Lady Celeste was murdered, Ivy and Quill must investigate before Ivy becomes a target herself. The story sets up the estate as a lively base for the women who follow.

Duke with Benefits gives mathematician Daphne a legendary cipher hidden among the library’s holdings. Solving it may lead to a fortune, but it also brings her into conflict with Dalton Beauchamp, the Duke of Maitland. The mystery is built around codes, research, and the question of who else wants the answer badly enough to cause harm.

In Wallflower Most Wanted, painter Sophia overhears something that puts another artist in danger. Reverend Lord Benedick Lisle joins her investigation, even though Sophia has little interest in being managed. One for the Rogue moves to geology and fossil hunting, pairing Gemma with Lord Cameron Lisle as a rival threatens her work and her safety.

The Christmas novella With This Christmas Ring links the series to the Lords of Anarchy books. It is not one of the four women’s central stories, but it fits the shared world and offers a reunion romance during a snowbound holiday gathering. Rogue, Set, Match is a two-in-one edition that collects Ready Set Rogue and Duke with Benefits.

Expect Regency romance with clever heroines, academic interests, a large library, and mysteries that grow naturally from what the characters study or create. Start with Ready Set Rogue for Lady Celeste’s inheritance and its first deadly secret, then follow the main novels in order.
