Series background & context
The Lords of Anarchy series takes place in Regency London and revolves around a notorious driving club. Its members race carriages at dangerous speeds, drink too much, and attract the kind of gossip respectable society claims to despise. Behind the reckless reputation, though, is a more serious problem: the club has been connected to crimes that put innocent people in danger.
The first book, A Good Rake is Hard to Find, begins after Jonathan Craven dies in what authorities call an accident. His sister, Leonora, does not believe that explanation. Jonathan had become involved with the Lords of Anarchy, so Leonora turns to his friend and her former fiancé, Lord Frederick Lisle, for help getting close enough to uncover the truth.
Pretending becomes risky fast.
Frederick and Leonora use a sham engagement as cover while investigating the club. Their old hurt and lingering attraction give the romance its spark, while Jonathan’s death reveals how far the wrong people will go to keep their activities hidden. The series establishes a key theme here: the women are not content to be protected from the truth when it concerns the people they love.
In Good Earl Gone Bad, Lady Hermione Upperton is a gifted driver who wants a place in the club on her own terms. When her father gambles away her hand in marriage and she is accused of murder, Hermione must rely on Jasper Fawley, the Earl of Mainwaring, to help clear her name. Their forced marriage is tied to a case involving both a killer and the club’s difficult past.
Good Dukes Wear Black follows newspaper writer Ophelia Dauntry and Piers Hamilton, the Duke of Trent. Ophelia sees a fellow writer abducted and believes the trail points back to the Lords of Anarchy. Piers is the club’s new leader, trying to clean up its name and remove the people who have turned it into a source of genuine harm. Their investigation tests whether reform is possible.
The novella With This Christmas Ring overlaps with both this series and Studies in Scandal. Merry Parks must honor a dying friend’s wish by finding a baby’s absent father, which forces her to seek help from Viscount Wrotham, the man she left years before. It is a snowbound Christmas reunion with connections to the wider cast.
These books combine carriage races, investigations, fake engagements, marriages of necessity, and women who insist on being part of the action. Begin with A Good Rake is Hard to Find, then read the three novels in order before treating With This Christmas Ring as a warm, connected epilogue.
