Stonecliffe Books in Order

Stonecliffe is one of Candace Camp's later Regency series, and it has a slightly sharper romantic-suspense edge than some of her earlier family books. The series begins with An Affair at Stonecliffe, continues with A Rogue at Stonecliffe, and moves on to A Scandal at Stonecliffe. All three books are tied to the Rutherford world and the estate that gives the series its name.

What makes Stonecliffe work is the blend of family inheritance drama and private danger. In the first book, Noelle Rutherford has spent years hiding her son from the aristocratic family that wants him back. In the second, an old first love returns carrying a warning and a blackmail problem. In the third, a broken engagement, a false identity, and a claim to an inheritance pull the hero and heroine into a deeper mystery.

Camp still cares about emotional buildup, but Stonecliffe is happy to bring in spies, investigators, former lovers, forged assumptions, and enemies from the past. The tone is romantic first, yet the suspense pieces keep the stories lively and give the couples something to do besides circle each other.

If you want late-period Candace Camp with a Regency setting, an estate at the center, and a little more intrigue than usual, Stonecliffe is an excellent choice. The books connect through family, but each romance stands well on its own, which makes the series easy to enter from the beginning and satisfying to continue.
