Stieg Larsson Books in Order

Stieg Larsson was born on August 15, 1954, near Skellefteå in northern Sweden. He spent much of his early childhood with his grandparents at Måggliden, a small farm near Bjursele. After his grandfather died, Larsson moved back in with his parents and younger brother in Umeå.

He was a serious reader early on, and he started filling notebooks with his own writing while still young. A typewriter became an important tool for him. Long before he published a novel, he was learning how stories worked by reading widely and trying to make his own.

Journalism gave him a path into the public life that mattered most to him. Larsson began freelancing while he was in high school in 1974, completed military service, traveled through parts of Africa in 1977, and then settled in Stockholm. In 1979, he joined the Swedish news agency Tidningarnas Telegrambyrå, where he worked for two decades.

The reporting was never a side interest.

Larsson spent years investigating racism, organized extremism, and anti-democratic movements. He became the Scandinavian correspondent for the British anti-fascist magazine Searchlight in 1982. In 1995, he helped found Expo, a Swedish magazine and foundation devoted to documenting the far right, racism, and threats to democracy. He later served as the magazine's editor-in-chief.

That work shaped the fiction he wrote in his spare time. Larsson created the three novels that became the Millennium trilogy around the partnership between investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander. The fictional magazine Millennium clearly draws on the kind of reporting world Larsson knew, with its tight budgets, stubborn editors, documents, sources, and powerful people who would prefer difficult stories to disappear.

He died of a heart attack in Stockholm on November 9, 2004, before his first novel was published.

The books arrived without the author who had made them.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo begins with Blomkvist investigating the long-ago disappearance of Harriet Vanger, aided by Salander's sharp research skills and refusal to be intimidated. The Girl Who Played with Fire expands into sex trafficking, murder, and the painful history behind Lisbeth's guarded life. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest brings the trilogy's conflicts with abusive institutions and secret state power to a head. Readers often come for the investigations but stay for the uneasy, lasting connection between Mikael and Lisbeth.

Larsson also left behind a substantial body of nonfiction journalism. The Expo Files collects articles and essays that show the concerns running beneath the novels, including right-wing extremism, racism, violence against women, homophobia, and the fragile work of protecting democratic life. His fiction is packed with suspense, but its anger at abuse of power was deeply connected to the reporting he did for years.
