Series background & context
The Steve Jobz books are private-eye thrillers with a slightly sharper grin than some of Vincent Zandri's other crime series. Jobz works as a PI, but his cases often begin with something that sounds almost small or absurd, then spin into murder, fraud, and danger fast.
That change in scale is part of the fun.
A school cafeteria extortion case, a vanished contractor, a suspicious tradesman, or a body-centered killer can all open into something uglier than expected. The series has a pulp pulse to it, but it stays grounded in everyday institutions, schools, neighborhoods, local cops, and ordinary people who are not nearly as harmless as they look.
Jobz himself is built for that kind of story. He is competent, wary, and willing to keep pushing when everyone around him would rather he backed off. These are not globe-trotting adventures. They are street-level crime books, often with Albany in the background, and they depend on atmosphere, pressure, and the slow realization that a supposedly easy job is a trap.
Compared with Dick Moonlight, Steve Jobz is less chaotic. Compared with Jack Marconi, he is lighter on institutional baggage. That gives the series its own lane, brisk PI novels with odd hooks, nasty turns, and a lead who knows how fast a favor can become a fight for survival.
If you want a clean entry point, start with The Embalmer and move forward from there.
