Series background & context

Chase Baker is Vincent Zandri's pulp adventurer, treasure hunter, sometime writer, sometime guide, and full-time magnet for danger. If Dick Moonlight gives you battered Albany noir, Chase gives you relic hunts, conspiracies, lost history, and the kind of cliffhanger momentum that happily hops from Florence to Egypt to the jungle and beyond.

He is a big character for big stories.

Chase lives partly in the world of old-school adventure paperbacks and partly in the post-Da Vinci Code relic-thriller tradition. Ancient artifacts, religious secrets, Nazi plots, hidden maps, buried treasure, and historical riddles all show up here. But Zandri keeps the books moving by making Chase funny, impulsive, vain, brave when he has to be, and constantly distracted by romance.

Florence matters a lot in this series. So do museums, churches, archaeological sites, libraries, back alleys, and places where history is layered right on top of the present. Chase often starts with a job that sounds academic or profitable, then finds himself trapped between rival factions who all want the same secret and have fewer scruples than he does.

The books are not meant to be solemn. They are fast, colorful, and unapologetically pulpy. That means the fun comes from the mix, history, flirtation, action, danger, and just enough absurdity to keep the stories lively. Chase is not a professor lecturing the reader. He is the guy sprinting through the cathedral, getting punched in the face, and making a joke anyway.

If you want the full experience, begin with The Shroud Key. It introduces Chase at his best, smart, overconfident, physically outmatched, and somehow still willing to chase the biggest secret in the room. From there the series widens into a long run of relic-driven adventures that know exactly how to keep the pages turning.
