Author bio
Vincent Zandri was born in Troy, New York, and raised in nearby Latham, just outside Albany. That upstate New York backdrop never really left him. It shows up all through his fiction, especially in the bruised streets, bars, neighborhoods, and old grudges that shape so many of his crime novels.
He came to writing from a mix of ambition, journalism, and real-world curiosity. In the 1990s, while helping develop material connected to a former prison guard's story, he found the spark that became his first novel, As Catch Can, later reissued as The Innocent. That book introduced Jack "Keeper" Marconi and also set the tone for a lot of what followed, damaged men, moral pressure, and danger that feels uncomfortably close.
He stuck with it.
Zandri earned an MFA in Writing from Vermont College, and alongside fiction he built a long career as a freelance writer and photojournalist. He has written journalism, essays, and commentary for a wide range of outlets, and that reporting instinct shows in the books. Even the wildest plots usually have a grounded, street-level feel, as if the author has actually walked the block, taken the train, or talked to the people involved.
A few books helped define his readership. The Remains is a psychological suspense novel built around childhood trauma, memory, and fear that refuses to stay buried. Moonlight Falls kicked off the Dick Moonlight books, which follow a former Albany detective turned massage therapist and private investigator with a bullet fragment lodged in his brain. The Shroud Key opened the door to the globe-trotting Chase Baker adventures, which lean into relic hunts, old conspiracies, and fast pulp energy. Readers who like Jack Marconi often start with The Innocent or The Guilty, while readers after something darker and more intimate often land on The Remains.
His fiction covers a lot of ground, but some patterns keep coming back. He likes broken investigators, survivors with unfinished business, ordinary people pushed into terrible choices, and cities that feel lived in rather than polished. Albany matters in these books. Florence matters too. So do prisons, bars, back roads, church relics, and the private obsessions that make people do reckless things.
He has also had an unusual publishing path. After a strong early start in traditional publishing, his career hit a rough patch during industry consolidation. Instead of fading out, he rebuilt, in part through digital publishing and a very hands-on approach to reaching readers. That second act became a big part of his story as a working writer.
In 2015, Moonlight Weeps won both the Shamus Award and the Thriller Award for Best Paperback Original. By then, Zandri had already become known for writing fast, writing often, and moving between series, standalones, novellas, and nonfiction without much fuss.
These days he lives between New York and Florence, Italy. He still writes across formats, still pulls from journalism and travel, and still seems most interested in characters who are a little battered, a little stubborn, and not nearly as safe as they think they are.
