Author bio
Stefanie London grew up in Melbourne, Australia, in a family that loved books. She has said she was the kind of kid who always had her nose in a novel, and that early reading life was all over the map, from The Baby-Sitters Club and Sweet Valley High to R.L. Stine, Agatha Christie, and the grown-up paperbacks she found at home. That mix still makes sense when you look at her work now. Her books are funny, romantic, a little messy, and very interested in what people do when life refuses to follow the plan.
Books got to her early.
After high school, she leaned into the subjects she loved most and later earned a business degree from La Trobe University in Melbourne. For about a decade she worked in corporate roles, including human resources, learning and development, change management, and communications. On paper, things were going well. But by her own account, something still felt missing, and that restlessness ended up mattering a lot.
She started writing romance fiction in late 2012. About a year later, she landed a two-book deal with Harlequin Mills and Boon, which gave that private creative urge a very real direction. Her first published novel, Only the Brave Try Ballet, arrived in 2014. From there she built out a body of contemporary romance that moves easily between glamorous cities, small Australian towns, holiday setups, and sharply funny workplace entanglements.
Another big change came when she and her husband left their banking jobs in Australia and moved to Canada. London has described that move as a leap of faith. In Toronto, she worked part-time at MAC Cosmetics while continuing to write, and when more contracts followed, she made the jump to writing full time.
That leap shows up in her fiction. A lot of her characters are starting over, taking risks, or trying to build a life that actually fits them.
Readers who pick up Pretend It's Love, Bad Bachelor, The Aussie Next Door, Kissing Lessons, or The Dachshund Wears Prada will see what she does well. She likes fake dating, awkward proximity, public embarrassment, small-town nosiness, and heroes who seem impossible right up until they become exactly the right person. Just as important, she writes women who are often rebuilding, whether that means fixing a career, rethinking a relationship, or finally choosing themselves.
She likes a messy setup, but she keeps the emotions honest.
Place matters in her books, too. Melbourne turns up often, especially in the earlier romances, and so do New York, beach towns inspired by coastal Victoria, and communities that feel just stylized enough to be fun while still grounded in everyday worries. Even when the premise is playful, a dating app ranking terrible men, a diva dachshund, a fake fiancée, the people inside the story usually want something simple and recognizable: safety, respect, family, trust, a second chance.
Her career has picked up plenty of milestones along the way. Pretend It's Love became a USA Today bestseller. Bad Bachelor was a finalist for the RITA award, and her books have won honors including the HOLT Medallion and the OKRWA National Reader's Choice Award. The Dachshund Wears Prada was also adapted for the screen as Paws in the City.
These days London lives in Toronto with her husband and writes across romantic comedy, cozy mystery, and thriller. She has also shared a few of the things she loves outside work, good coffee, lipstick, travel, romance novels, and anything zombie-related. That feels about right. Her books have polish, but they also have personality, and that combination has been there from the start.
