Author bio

Laurie Elizabeth Flynn writes young adult fiction and adult suspense from London, Ontario. Before becoming a novelist, she worked as a model, a job that took her to Tokyo, Athens, and Paris. She now lives with her husband and four children, balancing family life with stories full of secrets, uneasy friendships, and characters who don't always tell the truth.

Her route to fiction started with journalism school. Flynn has said that the biggest lesson she took from the experience was that she preferred inventing stories to reporting the news. It was a useful realization. Her novels have the close attention to detail and shifting perspectives of a mystery, but they stay focused on the messy emotions beneath the surface.

Made-up stories won.

Flynn's debut, Firsts, introduced readers to Mercedes Ayres, a teenage girl keeping a private and complicated arrangement with boys at school. The book takes sex, friendship, shame, and the wish to feel in control seriously, while letting Mercedes make mistakes that feel very human. It set the pattern for much of Flynn's work: a young woman at the center, a secret under pressure, and no easy way out.

She followed it with the YA thrillers Last Girl Lied To and All Eyes on Her, published under the name L. E. Flynn. In Last Girl Lied To, Fiona searches for answers after her best friend Trixie vanishes. All Eyes on Her looks at the death of a teenage boy through everyone around the girl accused of killing him, except the girl herself.

Those books show why point of view matters so much in Flynn's fiction. Friends can be loyal and damaging in the same breath. A rumor can become a verdict. The person telling the story may be scared, defensive, mistaken, or deliberately leaving something out. Readers who like character-driven mysteries will find that the suspense often comes from trying to work out what people want from each other.

Her adult debut, The Girls Are All So Nice Here, moved those concerns onto a college campus and into the lives of women facing the consequences of a decade-old friendship. The novel switches between freshman year and a reunion, following Ambrosia Wellington as old choices refuse to stay buried. Flynn continued writing adult suspense with Till Death Do Us Part, about a woman whose first husband, believed drowned years earlier, may not be dead after all.

The past is never quite finished in a Laurie Elizabeth Flynn novel.

Across her books, Flynn returns to social pressure, female friendship, romantic obsession, public judgment, and the stories people build to protect themselves. Her settings can be high school hallways, a college reunion, or California wine country, but the tension is personal and close-up. She writes characters who want to be understood, even when their choices make that difficult.
