Series background & context

The Steele Street series is high-energy romantic suspense built around a team with unusual roots. Before they became government operatives, many of its central characters were teenage car thieves working out of a Denver building on Steele Street. Years later, they are part of the Special Defense Force, or SDF, a covert team sent after threats that range from local trouble to international crises.

Denver is the series' anchor. The old Steele Street building, the cars, and the team's shared past give the books a lived-in feel, even when the action heads to Colombia, Panama, Paraguay, Central America, or other dangerous corners of the map. These people may have official missions now, but they still carry the habits, friendships, and scars of the streets where they grew up.

Each novel centers on a different couple. In Crazy Hot, paleontologist Regan McKinney crosses paths with former Air Force pilot Quinn Younger while searching for her missing grandfather. Crazy Cool reunites operative Christian Hawkins with Kat Dekker, the woman tied to a painful part of his past. Later books bring in soldiers, agents, scientists, art experts, private investigators, and civilians who discover that getting close to Steele Street can make them a target.

Nobody gets an easy assignment.

The suspense plots often involve stolen files, corrupt officials, drug networks, missing artifacts, weapons, assassins, and people who have spent years hiding their real identities. The danger is direct and fast-moving, but the emotional pull comes from the characters' history with one another. Former rivals become allies. Old crushes resurface. Team members are forced to decide whether loyalty means protecting someone, trusting them, or finally telling them the truth.

The tone is bold, sexy, and action-forward. Janzen gives her heroes and heroines plenty of banter and attraction, but she also lets them be bruised, wary, and stubborn. The romances are intense, while the broader SDF story keeps returning to questions of found family, survival, and whether damaged people can build something solid together.

The books work best in publication order. Every installment has its own main romance and central mission, but continuing characters and long-running threats build from Crazy Hot through Crazy Hearts. Starting at the beginning makes the relationships, nicknames, old grudges, and hard-won trust land with more weight.
