Neither fits the easy role of trusted ally, and that is part of the draw. Piper is not just deciding whether to work with them. She is constantly deciding whether she can believe what she sees in them, even when everything around her says she should run.

What begins with the Sahar Stone and a desperate attempt to protect the people Piper loves grows into a much larger conflict. Anti-daemon radicals, underworld power struggles, old grudges, and the threat of open war keep raising the stakes across the books. Piper is pushed from surviving one disaster to standing in the path of something much bigger than herself.

That makes the series feel larger than a straightforward good-versus-evil adventure. Marie likes blurred lines, and Steel & Stone leans hard into them. Daemons can be frightening, loyal, selfish, noble, manipulative, and unexpectedly kind, sometimes all at once. Piper's challenge is not only to fight monsters. It is to figure out who the monsters really are, and what kind of person she is becoming in the middle of all that uncertainty.

The tone is fast, dramatic, and very readable. There is action, danger, and romance, but also a lot of tension built from secrets, divided loyalties, and hard choices. Later books widen the lens beyond the human world and dig deeper into the Underworld, so the story gradually shifts from local danger to something much more sweeping.

If you like urban fantasy with a determined heroine, morally gray supernatural allies, and an ongoing story that keeps escalating, this is what Steel & Stone does well. It starts with one girl trying to do the right thing. It ends up asking what the right thing even looks like when every side is hiding something.
