Star Trek: TOS Books Books in Order

Jean Lorrah's Star Trek: The Original Series novels are mystery-driven adventures that spend unusual time with Vulcan culture and with people outside the Enterprise's regular bridge crew. They feature Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and their shipmates, but they also use Star Trek's future to ask how different species build families, communities, and trust.

Her two licensed Original Series novels are The Vulcan Academy Murders and The IDIC Epidemic. They work best as a pair.

In The Vulcan Academy Murders, Kirk, McCoy, and Spock travel to Vulcan when an injured Enterprise crew member needs treatment at the Vulcan Academy Hospital. A series of deaths quickly turns the visit into a murder investigation. The obstacle is not only finding a killer. On a world where murder is regarded as deeply illogical, many people resist admitting that murder could be happening at all.

The novel also brings Spock's family into the story. Amanda Grayson and Sarek are not simply guest appearances, because the mystery touches Spock's personal life as well as Starfleet's mission. That makes the Vulcan setting feel lived in, full of medical staff, students, traditions, and disagreements rather than just familiar names.

The IDIC Epidemic returns to characters and ideas from the first novel. The Enterprise goes to the Vulcan science colony Nisus, where a deadly plague threatens a community made up of Vulcans, Humans, Klingons, Orions, and others. The colony was founded on the Vulcan ideal of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, but fear of illness and war puts that ideal under real strain.

The mood is classic Trek with a mystery structure. There are medical questions, investigations, ethical pressure, and plenty of reasons for Kirk's crew to keep asking what the obvious explanation might be hiding. Lorrah is especially interested in how people from different cultures misunderstand one another, then sometimes find a way to cooperate anyway.

Begin with The Vulcan Academy Murders for the first meeting with its recurring characters and its close-up view of Vulcan. Then continue to The IDIC Epidemic, which raises the stakes from a local mystery to a crisis that could damage both a community and the wider Federation.
