Star Trek: The Classic Episodes collects James Blish's prose adaptations of episodes from the original Star Trek television series. The books offer a compact way to revisit Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and the crew of the Enterprise, but they are not simple transcripts. Blish turned television scripts into short stories, usually working from scripts and production material rather than the finished broadcasts.

That makes these versions interesting even for people who know the episodes well. Names, details, motivations, and even whole plot points can differ from what aired. Some stories preserve early script ideas. Others compress an hour of television into a quick piece of prose. The result feels like a parallel record of early Star Trek, shaped by the practical limits and possibilities of paperback fiction.
