Author bio
Stacy M Jones grew up in Troy, New York, and now lives in Little Rock, Arkansas. She holds master's degrees in journalism and forensic psychology. Before turning to novels, she worked as a criminologist and spent years around law enforcement, which helps explain why her crime fiction pays so much attention to motive, pressure, and the way investigations actually unfold.
She came to fiction with plenty of real-world material.
Her first novel, Deadly Sins, arrived in 2018. It introduced private investigator Riley Sullivan and set a pattern Jones has kept building on ever since, a strong lead, a sharp crime setup, and a story that keeps widening until old relationships and buried secrets matter just as much as the body on the page.
That kicked off a very busy run. Jones did not settle into one narrow corner of the genre. The Riley books go harder and darker. The Harper and Hattie books, starting with Saints & Sinners Ball, bring in ghosts, witches, and family chaos without losing the mystery. The Founders opened her FBI Agent Kate Walsh thrillers, and Midnight Judge pushed her into political suspense.
Different tone, same fascination with secrets.
Her background in forensic psychology shows up in the way suspects and victims are drawn. The bad actors in these books may do extreme things, but they rarely feel random. Jones is interested in obsession, denial, greed, shame, old grudges, and the smaller lies people tell long before a murder forces everything into the open.
If you read across her work, a few threads keep coming back. She likes women at the center of the story, whether that is Riley Sullivan refusing to drop a case, Harper Ryan learning that the supernatural is very real, or Kate Walsh chasing killers across cities and borders. She also likes institutions under strain, newspapers, police departments, elite schools, political offices, wealthy families, places where status can hide a lot of damage.
Setting matters too. Little Rock feels especially important in her fiction, not just as scenery but as a place with neighborhoods, routines, and people who remember each other's history. Boston, upstate New York, Washington, D.C., Miami, Edinburgh, and other locations widen the map, but the books still stay close to character. Jones writes cities as pressure cookers, not postcards.
Readers who click with Jones usually seem to like the same mix: brisk pacing, clear prose, recurring side characters who start to feel familiar, and mysteries that stay grounded even when the premise gets big. The Bone Harvest, We Last Saw Jane, The Magician, and Saints & Sinners Ball give a good sense of her range, from serial killer investigations to school secrets to paranormal cozies with a Southern streak.
Two of her series, Harper & Hattie and Riley Sullivan, are complete, while Kate Walsh continues and Connor Fitzgerald is still growing. That says a lot about the kind of writer she is. She seems happiest when she can move between hard-boiled crime, larger-scale thrillers, and lighter mysteries with a supernatural wink.
These days she writes from Little Rock, but her upstate New York roots still show through in the backgrounds and emotional weather of her books. The result is a body of work that feels practical, character-first, and built by someone who knows both the systems and the people caught inside them.
