Series background & context
Riley Sullivan is the grittiest of Stacy M Jones's mystery worlds, even when the stories open with something as familiar as a missing person case. Riley is a former crime reporter turned private investigator, and she carries both jobs with her. She knows how to ask questions, how to spot a weak story, and how to keep digging when everyone around her would rather call a case solved. Most of the books start in Little Rock, but the trail often reaches much farther.
Riley is not a polished superhero. She is smart, emotional, stubborn, and sometimes willing to make things harder on herself if that is what it takes to get to the truth. That rough edge is part of why the series works. Around her is a strong recurring cast, especially detective Luke Morgan and Riley's partner Cooper Deagnan, a former Little Rock cop. The mix of private investigation and police procedure gives these books a nice push and pull, because Riley is never fully inside the system and never fully outside it either.
These cases get dark fast.
Serial killings, cold cases, kidnappings, suspicious drownings, missing girls, and random sniper attacks all show up across the series. Deadly Sins throws Riley back into old relationships while she hunts a missing woman and a killer. The Bone Harvest and Missing Time Murders lean hard into serial crime. Later books like We Last Saw Jane, Harbor Cove Murders, and Fear City keep widening the canvas, but they hold onto the same core question, who is hiding what, and how far will they go to keep it buried?
The emotional thread matters just as much as the casework. Riley's history with Luke shapes the early books, and the series keeps building on that relationship instead of resetting it every time. Cooper brings experience and balance, but he also has his own scars and loyalties. Jones lets these characters carry the weight of past cases, which gives the series a lived-in feel.
This is a completed series, and it rewards being read in order. The mysteries can stand alone, but the personal arc is much stronger if you start at the beginning. If you like hard-boiled private eye stories with real feeling, strong supporting characters, and investigations that refuse easy answers, start with Deadly Sins and keep going.
