Series background & context
In Sprinkle Sundays, Coco Simon trades cupcakes for ice cream and follows three best friends whose weekend jobs keep their friendship alive. Allie, Sierra, and Tamiko have been inseparable since kindergarten. Then Allie’s parents divorce, she moves to a nearby town, and suddenly she’s facing a new school, new classmates, and a new daily routine without her two closest friends.
Things change again when Allie’s mom decides to chase a long-held dream and open an ice cream shop in their new neighborhood. Allie sees a chance to fix at least one part of her life. If she, Sierra, and Tamiko work there together on Sundays, they’ll have a built-in time to see each other every week. The girls dub themselves the Sunday Sundae Sisters and picture a job filled with sprinkles, samples, and nonstop fun.
Reality is a little messier. Scooping ice cream for real customers is hard work, and the girls have to learn how to serve people quickly, handle money, and keep the store clean. On top of that, they’re dealing with everything that comes with middle school: mean girls, shifting friend groups, new crushes, and the awkwardness of being “the new kid” or the friend who stayed behind.
Each book focuses on one girl at a moment when things feel especially wobbly. Allie struggles with jealousy and feeling left out when Sierra and Tamiko make new friends. Sierra has to balance her own ambitions with time at the shop. Tamiko wrestles with the pressure of always being the upbeat one. Through it all, the ice cream shop is their shared space—a place where they can vent about school, experiment with new flavors, and remember why they became friends in the first place.
The tone of Sprinkle Sundays is light and warm, with plenty of dessert details, but it doesn’t shy away from the real emotions that come with divorce, moving, and growing apart. It’s a good pick for readers who like friendship stories with a strong sense of place and a side of cold, creamy comfort.
