Author bio
Coco Simon is the name readers find again and again in the kids’ section, usually on brightly colored covers filled with cupcakes, ice cream cones, and donuts. Her stories are short, funny, and full of the small dramas that feel huge in elementary and middle school.
Before her name ever appeared on a book spine, she spent years as a children’s book editor. Reading other people’s stories all day, talking with young readers, and thinking about what makes a chapter book “click” has shaped the way she writes. She’s now written close to one hundred books for children, tweens, and young adults, aiming squarely at the eight-to-twelve-year-old reader (and sometimes younger siblings listening in).
Her best-known creation is the Cupcake Diaries series. These books follow four very different girls—Katie Brown, Mia Velaz-Cruz, Emma Taylor, and Alexis Becker—who start a cupcake business to survive the ups and downs of middle school. Each book is told from one girl’s point of view, so readers see the same group of friends, lockers, crushes, and catastrophes from four different angles.
Across the series, the Cupcake Club tackles more than recipes. Katie deals with shifting friendships and a newly blended family. Mia navigates a move from Manhattan and life in a new school. Emma balances big-sister duties and a budding modeling career. Alexis worries about money, leadership, and what happens when your careful plans fall apart. The problems are everyday ones—mean rumors, awkward crushes, changing bodies, new siblings—but they’re handled with warmth, humor, and a lot of frosting.
Simon later spun that mix of friendship and food into Sprinkle Sundays, a series about Allie, Sierra, and Tamiko, best friends whose lives change when Allie’s parents divorce and her mom opens an ice cream shop. Working together on “Sunday Sundaes” keeps them close even as they face new schools, new classmates, and the challenge of being both coworkers and friends.
With Donut Dreams, she shifted to another sweet treat and a small-town setting. The books begin with Lindsay Cooper, who works at her family’s Donut Dreams counter inside their restaurant and dreams of college in a bigger city. Through Lindsay and her cousins, the series touches on grief, big ambitions, tight-knit extended families, and the comfort of familiar routines—especially when those routines involve warm donuts.
Simon has also expanded her cupcake world in other directions. Graphic novel adaptations of early Cupcake Diaries titles bring Katie, Mia, Emma, and Alexis to life in full color for visual and reluctant readers. Cupcake Diaries: The New Batch introduces a younger Mini Cupcake Club—Emily, Natalie, Ren, and Alana—in shorter, heavily illustrated chapter books designed for kids just moving up from early readers.
What ties all of these books together is a consistent tone: kind, funny, and grounded in real feelings. Simon’s characters worry about divorced parents, money, popularity, cultural differences, and future dreams, but the stories always circle back to support, friendship, and small acts of courage. Whether the first page starts with a cupcake, an ice cream sundae, or a donut, the heart of her work is the same: kids figuring out who they are, one choice—and one treat—at a time.
