Split Second

by Douglas E Richards

2015

Physicist Nathan Wexler thinks he has found a way to send matter a fraction of a second into the past. When he is murdered and his fiancée Jenna escapes with his research, she must outwit ruthless enemies who understand just how world changing his “useless” discovery really is.

Series background & context

The Split Second series revolves around a form of time travel that sounds almost useless at first glance. Physicist Nathan Wexler discovers a way to send matter back in time, but only by a fraction of a second. There is no jumping years into the past to fix mistakes, only tiny nudges in the flow of events.0

That sliver of time turns out to be more powerful than anyone expects. Before Wexler can confirm his discovery, he and his fiance9e Jenna are attacked in their home. He is killed, she escapes with his research, and a quiet physics project becomes a life or death struggle involving intelligence agencies and covert groups that see how this "useless" technology could be weaponized.0

The first book, Split Second, follows Jenna as she learns just how far reaching the implications are. Sending information or small objects a split second into the past lets its user try again and again until they get things right, from dodging bullets to outthinking enemies. In the wrong hands, that advantage could topple governments or remake the world economy.0

The sequel, Time Frame, shifts the focus to Lee Cargill, head of a secret organization called Q5 that now controls the time shifting tech. When Cargill sends operative Aaron Blake on an unauthorized mission to eliminate Kim Jong un, events spiral out of control. China learns about Q5, old enemies resurface, and the same sliver of time that seemed trivial becomes the fulcrum for global conflict.0

Across both books, Richards plays with the logic of cause and effect while keeping the stakes very human. The series spends as much time on the moral cost of using this power as it does on the clever ways it can be applied. Readers who enjoy twisty, puzzle filled plots about time manipulation, but still want clear explanations and down to earth characters, will find plenty to dig into here.
