A Pivot In Time

by Douglas E Richards

2020

Series background & context

The Alien Artifact series asks what would happen if humanity suddenly gained access to a piece of technology so advanced it might as well be magic. In these books, that technology takes the form of the Enigma Cube, an alien object whose abilities grow more unsettling the longer it is studied.0

Dr Kelly Connolly is part of a small, secret team tasked with unlocking the cube inside a secure government facility. Years of work have yielded almost nothing, until one breakthrough triggers a chain reaction of betrayals, cover ups, and attempted thefts. When the project erupts into violence, Kelly is forced to flee with Justin Boyd, a black ops commando sent to control the situation, and the two quickly realize the cube is far more dangerous than anyone imagined.0

The Enigma Cube can twist reality, open paths to other places, and potentially rework history itself. Governments, rival teams, and shadowy power brokers all want to seize it, convinced that whoever controls the artifact will control the future. Kelly and Justin are caught between factions that would happily sacrifice millions for even a sliver of the cube's power, and every choice they make risks unintended, world scale consequences.0

The second book, A Pivot In Time, widens the canvas. We see the cost of meddling with the timeline when Otto Richter, a brilliant but eccentric physicist, is forced to travel back to ancient Rome. There he finds a world already entangled with alien influence, while in the present day competing cubes in different hands threaten to turn time travel into a geopolitical weapon.0

Across both novels, the series blends big set piece action with questions about who should wield transformative technology, and whether any group can be trusted with that much leverage over reality. The tone stays grounded in real physics and plausible near future politics, even as the story ranges from black sites and covert missions to gladiatorial arenas and centuries old conspiracies.0

Although each book tells a complete story, together they form a two part arc that starts with a mysterious object in a lab and ends with the fate of history itself up for grabs. Readers who like tight, idea driven science fiction with a strong thriller backbone will find this a compact, high stakes series.
