Author bio

Douglas E Richards grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, where an early love of science and stories ran side by side. After graduating from Finneytown High School in 1980, he went on to study microbiology at Ohio State University, then earned a master’s degree in molecular biology at the University of Wisconsin and an MBA from the University of Chicago.0

Before writing full time, Richards spent years in biotechnology, including a role as Director of Biotechnology Licensing at Bristol Myers Squibb. In the lab he engineered mutant viruses that still carry his name, work that gave him a front row seat to how fast real science can move, and how easily breakthroughs can be misunderstood.0

That mix of curiosity and caution shows up all through his fiction. Richards is best known for near future science fiction thrillers that ask big "what if" questions about technology, then follow ordinary people who get caught when those ideas suddenly become real. Books like Wired, Split Second, Infinity Born, Seeker, The Immortality Code, and The Breakthrough Effect lean on real research in fields such as genetics, quantum physics, artificial intelligence, and brain computer interfaces, but keep the focus on characters under extreme pressure.0

He did not start with globe spanning technothrillers, though. Richards first broke out writing for younger readers with The Prometheus Project series, which follows two kids exploring an underground alien city and learning to apply the scientific method to survive. He went on to write other middle grade adventures, including The Devil's Sword, Out of This World, and Ethan Pritcher, Body Switcher, all of which smuggle real science into fast moving plots.0

His adult work took off when Wired became a New York Times and USA Today bestseller and one of the most read Kindle technothrillers of its year. That success led to a sequel, Amped, and to a steady stream of standalone novels and series, among them the Nick Hall books about a man with mind reading implants, the Split Second duology about time shifting technology, the Alien Artifact novels about a reality bending alien cube, and collaborations like The Rift and the Epic of Atlantis.0

Across all of these, Richards tends to build each story around a single disruptive idea. What if you could send objects a fraction of a second into the past? What if a drug made lying impossible? What if an alien probe landed in the Amazon, or a buried starship opened a door to Atlantis? The thrillers spin out from there, mixing high stakes action with ethical questions about who should control such power.0

Outside of novels, Richards has written many science pieces for young readers, including work for National Geographic Kids and other magazines and broadcasters. He has also appeared as a special guest at San Diego Comic Con International, sharing space with some of the most recognizable names in science fiction and comics.0

Today Richards lives in San Diego, California, with his family and a dog, and his books have sold more than three million copies worldwide. He continues to turn emerging research into page turning stories, writing about cutting edge ideas in a way that stays grounded, clear, and fun to read.0
