Series background & context
The Split City series is a young adult dystopian story built around a simple, brutal divide: sunlight is power. The people at the top of the city live in the Towers, where they have light, money, and influence. Far below them, the Undercity survives in darkness, with access to life-saving VitD controlled by the people who already have everything.
The setting matters because the city is organized vertically. Going up can mean access, safety, or danger. Going down can mean hunger, gangs, and a life shaped by shortages. The gap between the Towers and the Undercity is not just about wealth. It affects health, freedom, and who gets to make the rules.
Arden knows the lower levels well. She is tied to the Lasair, a feared gang led by her brother Niall, and she has learned to look after herself in a place where trust is scarce. Dade comes from the other side of Split City. He is part of a powerful sun-kissed family and faces an arranged marriage, but his privileged life leaves little room for real choice.
When Arden and Dade meet, their connection is dangerous from the start.
The Breaking Light follows their growing relationship as class conflict sharpens around them. Both have strong ties to people who expect their loyalty, and both start to see the damage caused by the cityβs leaders. Their personal choices become tangled with a larger struggle over sunlight, medicine, and control.
In The Stolen Sky, the pressure rises. Arden and Dade are running from enemies while the supply of VitD has been wiped out and the Undercity is close to open rebellion. They join a hazardous operation to enter a heavily protected Solizen facility, where shifting alliances make every plan risky.
The series has the pace of a chase story, but its center is the bond between two teenagers from opposite ends of the city. Expect a mix of romance, action, family conflict, criminal power struggles, and a future society that makes basic survival political. Start with The Breaking Light, then continue directly with The Stolen Sky.
