Series background & context
The Splintered series begins with Alyssa Gardner, a Texas teenager who has spent her life trying not to look too closely at the family curse. She hears bugs and flowers whisper, the same symptom that helped send her mother to a psychiatric hospital. Alyssa can tell herself it is stress or imagination, until Wonderland starts looking less like a book and more like unfinished family business.
Wonderland is not cute here.
Howard's Nether-realm is a darker, sharper version of Lewis Carroll's world, full of dangerous bargains, strange creatures, and tests left behind by Alice's mistakes. In Splintered, Alyssa follows that trail underground, with her best friend and crush Jeb pulled into the danger beside her. Once there, she meets Morpheus, a charming and manipulative guide who knows far more about Alyssa's past than he first admits.
The series keeps one foot in the human world and one in Wonderland. Unhinged brings the magic back into Alyssa's everyday life, just as she is trying to think about prom, graduation, and art school. Ensnared pushes the conflict into the looking-glass world, where Alyssa and her father search for a way to save her mother, Jeb, Morpheus, and Wonderland itself.
At its heart, this is a story about inheritance. Alyssa has to decide what to do with a power she did not ask for, a crown she may not want, and two very different versions of love. The books mix YA romance with dark fairy-tale adventure, so readers should expect emotional stakes right alongside monstrous tea parties, riddles, and battles for the Red crown.
The companion pieces add useful texture. The Moth in the Mirror looks at Jeb's Wonderland memories through Morpheus's eyes, while Untamed gathers novellas that revisit Alyssa, her parents, and the aftermath of the trilogy. For most readers, the cleanest route is publication order: Splintered, The Moth in the Mirror, Unhinged, Ensnared, then Untamed.
