Aaron Conner has built himself a quiet life, with ordinary work, familiar routines, and the hope that the strange and dangerous parts of his past will stay there. Of course, urban fantasy does not usually reward that kind of plan for long.

When the hidden supernatural world pushes back into his life, Aaron has to pick up responsibilities he thought he had left behind. The first book makes it clear that he once walked a harsher path tied to magic, conflict, and some kind of larger order. The appeal comes from watching someone who knows exactly how costly that life can be decide whether he can really refuse it when innocent people are at risk.

That gives the series a slightly different feel from a discovery story. Aaron is not a newcomer learning that monsters are real. He is a man with old instincts, buried history, and reasons for wanting nothing to do with any of it. The tension lives in the gap between the life he wants and the one events keep demanding.

So expect modern-city fantasy with secret powers, old loyalties, and a lead whose reluctance is part of what makes him interesting.
