A discreet palace job in A Royal Affair leads toward royal scandal and blackmail. The Haunting of the Desks adds a quick, playful mystery around a supposedly haunted office. In The Lady from Burma, a dying wife wants help finding a future partner for her husband, and what starts as a sad, unusual request turns into something much darker. Even when the stakes widen into gangland business or espionage, the marriage bureau remains the anchor.

The supporting cast helps give the books range. Police detectives, aristocratic relatives, gangsters, war contacts, performers, palace staff, and anxious clients all drift in and out, and many of them have reasons to lie. The tone sits in a sweet spot between cozy and hard-edged. Iris and Gwen are very funny together, and the banter can be sharp, but the series never forgets that the war left real damage behind. Grief, trauma, rationing, corruption, and the pressure to keep up appearances all matter here. London itself feels like an active force, not just a backdrop.

That matters more than it sounds.

If you keep reading past the first book, the real pleasure is watching the partnership deepen. Gwen works to reclaim her independence, her finances, and her right to raise her son. Iris keeps running into people and secrets from the war she would happily leave buried. Their romantic lives shift, their business grows, and their trust in each other gets tested again and again. If you like historical mysteries with solid sleuthing, a strong sense of place, and two women who keep choosing action over helplessness, this series is an easy one to settle into.
