Space Hunter War Books in Order

Space Hunter War begins with a man coming home from war and discovering that home has no place for him anymore. Jack Bennet returns to find his old life gone, his family business sold, and his fiancée married to someone else. All he really has left is a military-surplus ship and the chance to turn bounty hunting into survival.

That is not a glamorous beginning, and that helps.

Jack starts as a practical working guy trying to stay afloat in the Pirate Worlds, a region where almost every deal comes with a knife hidden behind it. The jobs are dangerous enough on their own, but the series gradually reveals that Jack is operating inside a larger intelligence and political game whether he likes it or not. What looks like freelance work keeps turning into something closer to covert service.

That gives the books a nice texture. On one page, they are scrappy bounty-hunter adventures with drunks, smugglers, fugitives, and ugly stations. On the next, they are military SF thrillers about what power is doing off the books. Jack is a strong bridge between those modes because he is competent enough to matter and reluctant enough to stay human.
