Series background & context

The Soul series is a music drenched trilogy that follows one couple, Kai Pearson and Rhyson Gray, from the moment their lives collide in Los Angeles through the long stretch of building a relationship in the glare of fame.

In My Soul to Keep, Kai leaves small town Georgia for LA determined to carve out a career as a singer and songwriter. She has already lost her mother, and music is the one thing that still feels solid. Rhyson is a prodigy who has been famous for most of his life, a guitarist and vocalist whose talent has made him both powerful and lonely. When they meet, the pull between them is immediate, but Kai is wary of being swallowed by someone else’s spotlight and of repeating the kinds of sacrifices she watched other women make.

The first book traces the push and pull between a rising artist who is finally getting her own chances and a superstar who is not used to hearing the word no. Their chemistry is undeniable, but so are the pressures of labels, touring schedules and old wounds that make it hard for Kai to trust that Rhyson will choose her over the machine that surrounds him.

Down to My Soul picks up after a painful fracture. Kai has walked away because of a lie and because shadows from her past have resurfaced, making intimacy feel dangerous. Rhyson, for his part, is determined to win her back, even if that means confronting his own control issues and the ways his choices have hurt her. The book deepens their backstories while showing what repentance and forgiveness can look like when two stubborn people are still learning how to communicate.

By the time we reach Refrain, Kai and Rhyson are building a life together as two working artists at different points in their careers. There are glamorous nights, sold out shows and all the trappings of success, but also the grind of time apart, security threats and the basic question of how to stay soft with one another when the world keeps demanding that they be tough. The external stakes rise, yet the emotional core stays rooted in whether they can keep choosing each other.

The Soul trilogy connects loosely to the Grip and Hoops books through shared characters and cameos, but it stands comfortably on its own. At its heart it is about two people who love music almost as much as they love each other, and who have to learn that protecting their art and protecting their relationship do not have to be opposing goals.
