Author bio

Roy Lewis was the pen name of John Royston Lewis, an English writer whose crime novels often bring law, local history and uneasy communities together. Born in 1933, he lived in northern England, and that landscape mattered to his work. Northumberland, Durham, Wales and small English towns are more than backdrops in these books. They are places where old grudges, money worries and buried stories can turn dangerous.

Before fiction became his main outlet, Lewis trained as a teacher and spent ten years teaching law. He later worked as one of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Further and Higher Education. He also served with the Royal Artillery in the mid-1950s.

That practical knowledge of institutions gave his mysteries a solid footing.

Lewis wrote legal and educational nonfiction as J. R. Lewis, alongside articles on legal history and Victorian scandals. He also contributed pieces for the radio program Brought to Justice. The work he did outside fiction shows up in the novels, not as a lecture, but in the way contracts, inheritances, planning disputes and professional loyalties can shape a crime.

His first Inspector John Crow novel, A Lover Too Many, appeared in 1969. Crow is a Scotland Yard detective who is often sent beyond London to investigate cases that have already become tangled in local rivalries. The books have the patient pace of classic police mysteries, with a sharp eye for how people protect their reputations when pressure builds.

Lewis later created Eric Ward, a former police officer forced out of the job by glaucoma who retrains as a solicitor. Starting with A Certain Blindness, the Ward novels put a man with investigative instincts inside the legal profession. Cases involving estates, business deals and troubled clients regularly become personal, and Ward has to work through both the law and the people using it.

Then there is Arnold Landon, the mild-mannered medieval architecture expert at the center of A Gathering of Ghosts. Landon's interest in old buildings, landscapes and objects makes him an unusual detective. It also gives each case a useful complication: the past is rarely as settled as the people around him would like.

Lewis wrote more than sixty novels, as well as nonfiction. His crime fiction ranges across rural England, city offices, historic sites and later international settings, but the recurring question stays simple: who benefits when the truth remains hidden?

He died in 2019. His books remain a good fit for readers who like traditional mysteries with legal knots, detailed settings and investigators who notice what others would rather overlook.
