Series background & context

This page focuses on the collaboration between Jenny Han and fellow YA author Siobhan Vivian, especially their joint Burn for Burn trilogy. Working together, they took the fizzy drama of a high school story and layered in revenge, secrets, and a thread of the supernatural.

The trilogy is set on Jar Island, a postcard-worthy resort community where wealthy summer families and year-round locals all attend the same high school. From the outside it’s a place of bonfires, beaches, and homecoming games. Up close, it’s full of grudges, power plays, and the kind of casual cruelty that can change the course of someone’s life.

Han and Vivian alternate between three narrators—Kat, Lillia Cho, and Mary—who come from different corners of that world. Kat has been frozen out by her ex–best friend Rennie and branded as trouble. Lillia seems to have everything, but a horrifying night at a party shatters her faith in the boys she’s grown up with. Mary has returned to the island years after being bullied to the edge of collapse, carrying trauma that won’t quite stay in the past.

The partnership lets them lean into both heartbreak and horror.

Together the girls form a pact to 'even the score' with the people who hurt them. Early victories in Burn for Burn feel sharp and satisfying, but by Fire with Fire and Ashes to Ashes the plans have escalated into something no one can fully control. Feelings get tangled, innocent people are swept up in the fallout, and hints of something otherworldly begin to creep into Mary’s storyline.

What makes the collaboration stand out is the way two writers blend voices without losing nuance. The books move smoothly between Kat’s brash humor, Lillia’s conflicted loyalty, and Mary’s haunted interior life. Underneath the twists and cliffhangers, the trilogy is asking hard questions about accountability, bystander guilt, and what it really means to move on.

Readers curious about how Han writes when she’s pushing into darker territory will find those answers here, in partnership with Vivian’s sharp eye for social dynamics. Jar Island may be fictional, but the emotional stakes—the desire to be seen, to be believed, and to take back power after being hurt—feel very real.
