Series background & context

In the Burn for Burn trilogy, co-written by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian, revenge starts out as a fantasy and slowly becomes something much more dangerous. The books are set on Jar Island, a tourist-perfect place of boardwalks, big houses, and a high school where the social hierarchy feels carved in stone.

At the center are three girls who don’t seem to belong together. Kat has been pushed to the margins after her ex–best friend Rennie turned the school against her. Lillia Cho is popular, rich, and used to looking out for her younger sister, but a betrayal at a party makes her question the boys she’s always trusted. Mary, quiet and anxious, has returned to Jar Island years after an episode of extreme bullying drove her away, determined not to be the scared girl she once was.

Each of them wants payback for something they can’t forgive, and none of them can act alone without risking their own reputation. So they form a secret alliance and start to sabotage the people who hurt them—small humiliations at first, then bigger plans that spiral into real harm. What begins as satisfying, almost prank-like revenge quickly starts to feel out of control.

Revenge is the spark; Jar Island is the fuel.

As the trilogy moves from Burn for Burn to Fire with Fire and Ashes to Ashes, the tone shifts from high-school drama into something more eerie. Strange coincidences pile up around Mary, and the girls begin to wonder whether there’s more at work on Jar Island than mean kids and rotten luck. Love interests get tangled up with targets, loyalties blur, and the line between justice and cruelty becomes hard to see.

This is one of Han’s edgier projects, full of late-night parties, whispered rumors, and the ugly side of a supposedly perfect town. The books dig into bullying, sexual pressure, and the way adults often look away from what’s happening right in front of them. They also make room for the quieter costs of anger—guilt, isolation, and the fear that you’ve become the kind of person you once hated.

Readers who know Han mainly for sun-soaked beaches and soft-baked cookies will find a different flavor here. The Jar Island books still care about friendship, family, and first love, but they wrap those themes in a slow-building mystery and an almost ghost-story mood that lingers long after the last chapter.
