Series background & context
The Shopaholic books follow Becky Bloomwood, later Becky Brandon, a young financial journalist who has a weakness for gorgeous things she absolutely cannot afford. From the first pages she is juggling overdue bills, ominous letters from the bank and daydreams of the perfect outfit.
Her solution is rarely to stop spending; it is to come up with a new plan.
In Confessions of a Shopaholic and Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, Becky stumbles through London and New York giving money advice she barely understands while hiding the size of her own debts. Her crush on cool, collected PR executive Luke Brandon turns into a relationship, but even love does not cure her habit of buying just one more bag, dress or candle she cannot resist.
As the series goes on the stakes grow up along with her. Shopaholic Ties the Knot and Shopaholic & Sister bring weddings, in‑laws and the shock of discovering a thrifty half‑sister who sees shopping as a waste, not a hobby. In Shopaholic & Baby and Mini Shopaholic, Becky faces pregnancy, rambunctious toddler Minnie and the hard work of being a parent who wants to spoil her child but also keep a roof over everyone’s head.
Later books take Becky out of familiar London streets. In Shopaholic to the Stars she follows Luke to Los Angeles, dreaming of becoming a celebrity stylist and discovering how shallow and demanding the spotlight can be. Shopaholic on Honeymoon and Shopaholic to the Rescue fill in the gaps of that American adventure, sending Becky across Venice, the desert and Las Vegas in a mix of road‑trip chaos and family rescue mission.
Christmas Shopaholic brings her back to an English village, where she is suddenly responsible for hosting the family Christmas she used to simply turn up to. With vegan turkeys, complicated guests and the search for the elusive perfect present, Becky learns that festive pressure can feel a lot like any other kind of overspending.
Across the series you can expect fizzy first‑person narration, running jokes about credit cards and loyalty cards, and a heroine who gets things wrong more often than she gets them right. Underneath the slapstick there is a real thread about debt, shame and learning to take responsibility without losing your optimism. Readers often follow Becky from book to book as they would a friend, watching her move from single life to marriage, motherhood and midlife while never quite losing the thrill of a great bargain.
