Author bio
Sophie Kinsella was born Madeleine Sophie Wickham in London in 1969 and grew up as the eldest of three sisters. Books, jokes and everyday conversations around the kitchen table all fed into the sharp, funny voice readers later came to know.
Her fiction keeps returning to ordinary people who make questionable decisions and then try, somehow, to put things right.
At university she first studied music at Oxford before switching to politics, philosophy and economics, a change that suited her curiosity about how people and money work. After graduating she became a financial journalist in London, commuting on busy trains and reading the kind of paperbacks she would later write herself.
In her early twenties she started drafting a novel on the side, scribbling ideas between deadlines. That book became The Tennis Party, published in 1995 under her married name, Madeleine Wickham. More novels followed, including 40 Love, Swimming Pool Sunday and Cocktails for Three, all contemporary stories about friendships, marriages and the quiet pressures of class and money.
While still working as a journalist she wrote a new manuscript in secret and sent it to her publisher without her real name attached. The story of Becky Bloomwood, a financial journalist who adores shopping and cannot face her bank statements, was accepted on its own terms, and the pseudonym Sophie Kinsella was born. The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic—published in the United States as Confessions of a Shopaholic—grew into a long‑running series and was later adapted for film, introducing Becky to an even wider audience.
Becky’s mix of optimism, denial and genuine kindness set the tone for much of Kinsella’s later work.
Away from the Shopaholic books she liked to build stories around bold 'what if' ideas. In Can You Keep a Secret? a nervous flyer blurts out every private detail of her life to a stranger who turns out to be her boss. The Undomestic Goddess follows a high‑powered lawyer who escapes a disaster at work and accidentally becomes a country housekeeper who can barely boil an egg. In Remember Me? a woman wakes from an accident to find three years of ambition have turned her into someone she hardly recognizes, while Twenties Girl pairs a struggling young woman with the ghost of her flapper‑era great‑aunt. Books such as I've Got Your Number, My Not So Perfect Life and Surprise Me carried this blend of romantic comedy, workplace trouble and family drama into new settings.
Kinsella also wrote for younger readers. The young adult novel Finding Audrey follows a teenage girl recovering from anxiety after bullying at school, mixing serious themes with a chaotic, loving family. For children she created Ella and her accident‑prone fairy mother in the Fairy Mom and Me series, a set of short, illustrated adventures built out of bedtime stories she told her own children.
Throughout her career she balanced writing with family life. She met her husband, Henry Wickham, when they were both students at Oxford, and together they raised five children while she continued to deliver novels, tour for events and stay in touch with readers.
In 2022 she was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, and shared the news publicly two years later. Even while in treatment she kept writing, publishing The Burnout, about two exhausted strangers at a faded seaside resort, and What Does it Feel Like?, a short, intensely personal book about a novelist living with a brain tumor. She died in December 2025 at the age of fifty‑five, leaving behind shelves of stories that many readers describe as comfort reads—quick to make you laugh, honest about fear and mistakes, and always hoping for a better next chapter.
