The Shifting Circle novels bring shapeshifters into a mostly familiar modern American world. In The Shape of Desire, Maria Devane has loved Dante Romano for years. Dante shifts into an animal each month, and the time he can spend in human form is shrinking. Maria has protected his secret, but a series of violent attacks forces her to consider what she knows, what she has ignored, and whether love can survive the fear surrounding them.

Still Life with Shape-shifter follows Melanie Landon, who has spent her life protecting her half sister Ann from a world that would not understand her. When freelance writer Brody Westerbrook arrives asking questions about Ann’s disappearance, Melanie wants him gone. Ann’s return, ill and vulnerable, makes secrecy harder to maintain and gives the story its central emotional problem.

The final novel, The Turning Season, centers on Karadel Baylor, a rural veterinarian who has made a modest, caring life among both shifters and humans. She looks after animals and helps people who need a safe place, while quietly working on a way to give shifters more control over their changes. A new relationship and a public crisis threaten the fragile balance she has created.

The books share a world and a concern with secrecy, but each one has a different protagonist and relationship at its center. Readers can expect contemporary fantasy, romantic tension, found family, and people trying to decide when hiding protects them and when it keeps them from living honestly.

Start with The Shape of Desire for the fullest sense of the world’s rules. The later books can stand on their own more easily, but reading in order lets the circle of friends and the wider consequences of exposure come into focus.
