Author bio

Shelley Noble is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling novelist whose work ranges from contemporary beach stories to historical mysteries and fiction about women quietly changing the world. She is also an accomplished short story and series writer under the name Shelley Freydont, drawing on a first career spent in studios, rehearsal rooms and onstage.

She grew up in the American South, where hot, slow summers and long days of make believe taught her to live in her imagination long before she realized that habit could turn into a life of writing.

Noble studied both dance and philosophy at the University of Utah, eventually choosing the studio over the seminar room and earning a BFA and an MFA in dance. After graduating she taught in a women’s physical education department in California, learning how to break down movement, structure and rhythm in ways that later proved surprisingly useful on the page.

New York called next. Noble moved east and spent years as a professional dancer, performing with modern companies led by Louis Falco and Twyla Tharp and touring in the United States and abroad. She appeared on public television, consulted on Broadway productions and worked in film, contributing to projects such as Amadeus, Mona Lisa Smile and The Game Plan. Later she added ballroom work with American Ballroom Theater to her resume, bringing yet another style of storytelling through motion into her life.

When she stepped back from full time performing to raise her two children in the New Jersey suburbs, Noble did not leave stories behind. A conversation with a friend at a museum nudged her toward trying a mystery, and the result was the Lindy Haggerty dance company novels, followed by Sudoku themed puzzles, small town festival mysteries and Newport Gilded Age whodunits written as Shelley Freydont. These books let her turn rehearsal drama, backstage politics and her love of historical detail into playful amateur sleuth tales.

Writing as Shelley Noble, she shifted into contemporary women’s fiction with Beach Colors, Stargazey Point, Breakwater Bay and Whisper Beach, novels that return again and again to weathered boardwalks, working harbors and seaside towns in need of a second chance. Her heroines are often women at a crossroads who come home broke, bruised or burned out and find community, friendship and love in places they once took for granted.

More recently Noble has brought her fascination with history, architecture and overlooked women to the forefront in historical novels such as The Tiffany Girls, The Colony Club and The Sisters of Book Row. These books follow artists, activists and businesswomen in Gilded Age and early twentieth century New York, using real landmarks and events as the backdrop for stories about creative work, censorship and the slow, stubborn fight for a larger life.

Today Noble lives in New Jersey not far from the shore, happily positioned between lighthouses and vintage carousels on one side and New York’s theatres and old streets on the other. She belongs to groups such as Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America and the Women’s Fiction Writers Association, and she still thinks like a choreographer, arranging characters on the page the way she once placed dancers on a stage: listening for rhythm, watching the line of a scene and always looking for the quiet moment that reveals who someone really is.
