by Shelley Noble

2014

Series background & context

The Breakwater Bay books are steeped in Newport, Rhode Island, with its crumbling mansions, working harbors and layered social history. At their center is Meri Hollis, a talented preservationist who restores Gilded Age houses for a living and believes she understands her own family story as clearly as any set of architectural plans.

In the novel Breakwater Bay, Meri is happily immersed in a new project and close to both her grandmother and the neighbors who helped raise her. A long kept secret shatters that calm: as a baby she was the unknown infant found on the shore during a storm, rescued by her childhood friend Alden Corrigan and taken in by the Calder family. The revelation cracks open three decades of silence and forces Meri, Alden and their families to revisit what happened the night a pregnant girl vanished into the waves.

Noble uses the restoration of a once grand Newport mansion as a mirror for Meri’s personal renovation. As she peels back layers of plaster and paint from ballrooms and servants’ corridors, she also uncovers layers of choices, sacrifices and lies that shaped her childhood. The novel balances romance between Meri and Alden with questions about inheritance, belonging and how much of identity comes from blood versus the people who show up for you.

Two shorter works expand the world. The e novella Newport Dreams serves as a prequel, following Geordie Holt, a drifting young woman whose wealthy father is pressuring her to settle down. A photography job on a challenging renovation brings her to Gilbert House, another neglected Newport property, and into conflict and slow burn attraction with architect Bruce Stafford. Their romance unfolds against scaffolding, dust and the satisfaction of bringing a forgotten house back to life.

A Newport Christmas Wedding returns to Meri and Alden a year after Breakwater Bay, as they prepare to marry during the holiday season. The focus here is on blended family rather than mystery. Meri worries about becoming stepmother to Alden’s teenagers, Nora and Lucas, while the kids wrestle with grief, loyalty to their late mother and fears about what the new marriage will change. A looming winter wedding, family miscommunications and a timely Christmas surprise push them toward a more honest understanding of what it means to be a family.

Across the series, readers can expect coastal scenery, detailed restoration work and characters trying to reconcile the pull of history with the need to build something new. Reading in order lets you watch Meri move from shock and anger to a more grounded sense of her place in both the Calder and Corrigan clans, with Newport’s tides always in the background.
