Defy Not the Heart

by Johanna Lindsey

1989

When fierce knight Ranulf de Warbrooke abducts Lady Reina to deliver her to an odious bridegroom, she makes him a bold offer: marry her himself and gain her lands. Their bargain marriage pits her pride against his iron will as enemies and passion circle their new union.

Series background & context

Shefford's Knights is Lindsey’s take on medieval England at its most turbulent, when royal whims and baronial grudges could upend any carefully laid plan. The books are connected by the Shefford name and by a shared world of castles, sieges, and marriages arranged for power rather than love.

In the first novel, a young noblewoman finds her life bargained away without her consent. Promised to a loathsome lord she despises, she sees one risky escape: offering herself instead to the knight hired to deliver her to the wedding. He’s a towering warrior with little patience for her temper, but he’s also tempted by the chance to trade years of service for land, wealth, and a highborn bride.

What begins as a cold deal quickly becomes more complicated. She resents being treated as a prize, and he refuses to be a pawn in her schemes. Castles must be defended, rivals confronted, and a marriage that started as a practical bargain slowly gains real feeling as both discover the other’s fears and vulnerabilities.

The second book moves to another couple whose futures are tied to Shefford power. A headstrong heiress and an equally stubborn knight are betrothed in childhood to cement an alliance between powerful houses. Years later, neither wants the match. She bristles at the idea of being claimed by a man chosen for her; he assumes she’s a pampered lady who’ll never accept the rough realities of his life.

Circumstances, and a dangerously unstable King John, leave them little choice but to work together. Their road to the altar runs through kidnappings, attempted sabotage, and a slow recognition that the person they’ve been resisting might actually be the one who understands them best.

Across both books, the series leans into classic medieval-romance pleasures: tournaments, moats, cramped solar chambers, grizzled retainers, and the constant threat of both political and physical betrayal. The tone is direct and character-focused, with plenty of heat and more than a little humor as proud knights discover that courage in battle is one thing—and figuring out a strong-willed partner is another entirely.
