Man of My Dreams

by Johanna Lindsey

1992

Series background & context

The Sherring Cross series follows a small circle of English and Scottish aristocrats linked to the Sherring Cross estate, where fortunes, titles, and hidden agendas collide. Set mostly in the nineteenth century, these books blend humorous courtship tangles with genuine questions about class and security.

The first story centers on Megan Penworthy, a spirited redhead who decides as a girl that she will marry the powerful Duke of Wrothston and no one else. Years later, she’s turning away perfectly good suitors while waiting for a man she has never actually met. When a supposedly common horse breeder named Devlin Jefferys arrives on the scene, she sees him as beneath her plans. Unbeknownst to Megan, Devlin is the very duke she’s been chasing, traveling incognito to avoid trouble.

Their relationship becomes a duel of pride and attraction. Megan clings to her dream of a grand match even as she’s drawn to the man she believes is “only” a breeder. Devlin, amused and exasperated in equal measure, decides to teach her a lesson about judging by rank—only to fall hard himself.

The second book shifts focus to the Sherring Cross estate itself, now home to another independent-minded heiress. Still grieving her mother and furious at her father’s plans to remarry, Kimberly Richards is being pushed into a marriage of convenience purely to clear the way for his new bride. The impoverished Scottish laird Lachlan MacGregor badly needs a wealthy wife, but the last thing he expects is to fall for a woman who openly disdains fortune hunters.

Their slow, reluctant connection plays out against clan politics, English society’s snobbery, and lingering feelings for other people that both must face.

The final novel, The Pursuit, brings a Scottish heroine and English hero together in a classic chase across borders. A runaway bride heads for the Highlands determined to escape an unwanted English marriage, only to find herself pursued by the very man she’s supposed to wed. Their cat‑and‑mouse journey forces them to reevaluate what they think they know about duty, reputation, and each other.

Throughout the Sherring Cross books, readers get the pleasures of sweeping estates, family councils, and the clash between Scottish and English expectations. The tone leans light and witty, with plenty of mistaken identities and stubborn lovers, but the underlying question—what kind of life do you really want, once the dust settles?—keeps the stories grounded.
