Author bio
Shawn Inmon was born in the vanished town of Riffe, Washington, a place now under the waters of a reservoir. Growing up in nearby small towns, he fell in love early with stories, radio voices, and the idea that ordinary lives could hold extraordinary turns.
Before he ever wrote full time, he spent decades jumping between jobs. He sold seeds and Christmas cards door to door as a kid, ran a short-order grill after lying about his age to get hired, and learned the hard way how not to burn a burger. He toured with the Unlimited Hydroplanes, traveled as a T-shirt salesman, bought inventory for department stores, fished for crabs, and spun records as a morning DJ in several states. Later, he settled into real estate, managing and brokering offices while quietly dreaming about the novels he might one day write.
Those years gave him what he likes to call an education in people. Every job, every move, and every odd customer added another detail he could use later. When he finally turned to fiction full time, he had a lifetime’s worth of voices, settings, and near-misses to draw from.
His first books stayed close to home. Feels Like the First Time is a true story about the girl next door, Dawn, whom he fell for as a teenager in the 1970s. Her parents tore them apart, and they spent nearly three decades living separate lives before finding their way back to each other. In Both Sides Now, Dawn tells the same story from her point of view, filling in the gaps and quiet moments he missed the first time around.
From there, Shawn moved into the what-ifs that had been tugging at him for years. The Middle Falls Time Travel series began with The Unusual Second Life of Thomas Weaver, where a man who dies in his fifties wakes up in his teenage body with every memory intact. Later books like The Redemption of Michael Hollister and The Death and Life of Dominick Davidner keep circling the same question in new ways: if you actually got a do-over, what would you change, and what would it change in you?
He did not stop with one universe. In the Alex Hawk books, starting with A Door Into Time, he flings a modern Special Forces veteran through a portal into a far-future version of Earth that looks a lot like its prehistoric past. The Kragdon-ah novels mix time travel, lost-world adventure, found family, and the kind of big creatures and bigger questions that let him stretch in new directions.
Alongside the fiction, he writes about his own life with the same plainspoken tone. A Lap Around America and A Lap Around Alaska follow long road trips he took with his wife, trading stable jobs for two-lane highways, national parks, and the simple joy of seeing what waits around the next bend.
These days, Shawn writes full time in coastal Washington. He shares his life with Dawn, the high school sweetheart who became his wife, their growing crew of daughters and grandchildren, two happy chocolate Labs named Sadie and Hershey, and a willful cat called Georgie. Most mornings he makes a short commute from the bedroom to his writing desk before sunrise, often after a long walk where the dogs tug him along and new story ideas fall into place.
His books keep coming back to the same territory: second chances, small towns, everyday people who have made real mistakes, and the stubborn hope that we can still do better next time.
