A Door Into Time

by Shawn Inmon

2020

Ex–Special Forces soldier Alex Hawk notices a strange wall in his basement, tears it apart, and finds a glowing doorway—and a written warning he ignores. Stepping through hurls him into far‑future Earth, where primitive tribes and giant predators rule.

Series background & context

The Alex Hawk books begin in a very ordinary basement. Alex is a former Army Special Forces soldier struggling to adjust to civilian life, a divorce, and the fear that he is disappointing his young daughter. When he notices that one wall in his basement is the wrong length, curiosity and training push him to investigate. Behind the paneling is a brick wall, behind that another, and behind that a black doorway edged in light and a handwritten warning he does not heed.

Stepping through the doorway hurls Alex far into Earth’s future, into a world known as Kragdon-ah. Civilization has collapsed and then rebuilt along entirely different lines. There is no advanced technology, but there are tribes, cities, and a rugged landscape filled with enormous predators and strange creatures that feel half prehistoric, half myth.

The early trilogy—A Door Into Time, Lost in Kragdon-ah, and Return from Kragdon-ah—follows Alex as he learns to survive, earns a place among the people of Kragdon-ah, and grapples with the knowledge that his daughter is still back in the twenty‑first century. The books mix straight-ahead adventure with an ongoing emotional thread: a father who will cross armies and time itself to try to get home, even as he starts to care deeply for the new world he has landed in.

Later volumes show what happens when that simple mission gets messier. Alex eventually does make it back to his own time with his daughters Amy and Sanda, only to be called through the portal again when old allies in Kragdon-ah face new threats. Books like Warrior of Kragdon-ah and Prince of Kragdon-ah expand the canvas, bringing in invading forces armed with guns, sailing voyages into deadly mists, and conflicts that threaten the very soul of this wild future Earth.

As the series continues through Mists of Kragdon-ah, Tribes of Kragdon-ah, Armies of Kragdon-ah, and Battle for Kragdon-ah, the focus shifts from one man’s survival to the fate of an entire continent. Alex helps unite warring tribes, trains armies, and tries to steer progress without simply remaking Kragdon-ah into the broken world he left behind. His massive, loyal dog Monda‑ak and his daughters become central to that story, turning the books into a blend of family saga, war story, and portal fantasy.

What makes the Alex Hawk adventures stand out is how grounded they feel despite the giant creatures and sweeping battles. Alex plans like a soldier, worries like a dad, and makes mistakes that have real consequences. The Kragdon-ah setting is harsh but not grim for its own sake, full of everyday work, jokes, and quiet moments alongside the set pieces.

For new readers, starting with A Door Into Time is essential, since it introduces the doorway, Alex’s family, and the basic rules of this universe. After that, you can move straight through in publication order to watch Kragdon-ah and Alex’s role in it grow bigger and more complex with each book.
