Author bio

Shawn Chesser lives in the Pacific Northwest, in the Portland area, with his family. He studied writing at PCC Sylvania, a school he jokingly calls Harvard on the Hill, which tells you something useful about his tone right away. He takes the work seriously, but he does not seem interested in putting on airs.

His way into the genre came early. On his twelfth birthday, his mother let him stay up with a couple of friends and watch George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. That was the hook.

He has said books like Lucifer's Hammer and Stephen King's The Stand widened that obsession into a love of post-apocalyptic fiction in general. He also has very clear zombie preferences. Slow, shambling, moaning Romero-style creatures, yes. Fast sprinters, not so much.

Chesser did not come to fiction through a neat, polished career path. He nearly joined the Army in 1989 because he badly wanted to fly helicopters, but walked away when the route into aviation did not feel right. Years later, a couple of years after getting sober, he decided to write a novel as a challenge to himself and see if he could actually finish one.

That first novel was Trudge, and the origin story behind it is very Shawn Chesser. He wrote much of it on his iPhone while his son was at indoor soccer, then emailed the pages to himself and pasted them into a document later. Out of that improvised process came Cade Grayson, a former Delta Force operator trying to cross a collapsing America and reunite with his family.

The book turned into the long-running Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse series, which grew through Soldier on, In Harm's Way, A Pound of Flesh, Allegiance, and many later installments. Readers who click with Chesser usually like the mix of military detail, relentless movement, and very personal stakes. Even when the books get bigger, with compounds, missions, and national-level threats, the engine is still family, loyalty, and the bad decisions people make when the world gives them no good ones.

He did not stop with one apocalypse.

With The Promise, he launched Riker's Apocalypse, a separate series built around Army veteran Lee Riker, his sister Tara, and a small, odd, funny, stubborn survivor group trying to stay alive in a world going sideways. Later, with Quiet War, he took Cade Grayson into a straight military thriller. That shift makes sense. Chesser has long talked about his interest in soldiers, weapons, aircraft, and war history, even though he has also been clear that he never served.

Family runs through the work in a very direct way. In one interview, he explained that his own children inspired the names Cade and Raven. He has described himself as a family man who dotes on his kids, and that shows up all over the fiction, in parents who keep moving long after common sense says stop, in found families that form under pressure, and in hard men who are most believable when they are trying to protect one person they love. He still lives in the Pacific Northwest, keeps writing, and seems happiest when he can blend horror, survival, and military suspense into the same story.
